The chaotic, divisive climate of our country has been instrumental in the emergence of a deep passion of mine to explore Sacred Activism, a term coined by Andrew Harvey. What would it look like to merge Spirituality with Activism? How would that benefit one’s spiritual evolution, and how would it contribute to the birth of a more beautiful world?
First I’d like to say a word about activism–Activism gets a bad rap.
Many see activism as either hostile, aggressive, violent, or a boring, tedious and ineffective way to achieve change. Others think it is just too overwhelming and depressing to stay aware, informed and intimately engaged. None of these things have to be your experience. The particular form of activism that is right for you is varied and unique, and no one form is better or more right for any particular person. We need activists of all sorts – those who stand on the front line in protest, non-cooperation, and civil disobedience, but also those who feel called to meet the needs of those who are suffering – vulnerable populations of people, animals, plants, and the Earth itself. You might work for a political candidate, or volunteer at an animal shelter. You might pick up trash along a stream or highway, or mentor a child. You might protest the overreach of ICE, or volunteer at your local hospice or jail. We need all these actions in various parts of society, fitting together like pieces of a puzzle to make a better whole.
What then, would Sacred Activism look like? What does it look like when someone acts from their grounding in spiritual principles? Think of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and of course Jesus.
They were all radical revolutionaries who were grounded in the power of Love that endeavors to help all individuals – friends and enemies- trust in Life and Love enough to seek a spiritual solution to any challenge we face.
They were all highly effective because when someone speaks truth from a consciousness that recognizes our interconnection, others witness the true power that Love has to create change.
Now, none of us have to wait until we are as highly evolved as these spiritual giants to take action. They provide inspiration, guidance, and role models for all of us, but we can engage as spiritual activists with merely an intention to grow spiritually and serve others from the knowledge that we are all connected, and that what we do to another we do to ourselves.
I would define an activist as anyone who is committed to engaging in actions that create a more compassionate, sustainable, equitable world for all beings. A Sacred Activist is someone whose engages in that action grounded in universal spiritual truth.
It is a universal spiritual principle that in order to be happy you must serve a cause greater than the small self.
In Pathwork Lecture 5, the Guide says,
“Your happiness will be given to you so that you can pass it on. Then you will indeed become a link in the chain, which is the sole requisite to keep the stream of happiness alive and flowing. In this way it will never dry out. Whatever the person who serves as such a link gives out will be reciprocated a hundredfold. God will always show you how, in what form, your love and knowledge and happiness can be passed on to others, but first you must have the readiness to do so. Indeed, today, tomorrow, next week, and every day you have to make the resolution to be in readiness; you must consciously conquer your resistance. Do not push it into unconsciousness. Then you must try to translate the readiness into action. And so the spiritual law can begin to fulfill itself in you.”
That said, as imperfect humans from time to time we might encounter feelings of despair, hopelessness, or being overwhelmed. This is not a sign to quit but an opportunity to dive deeper and transform whatever misconception or lower self negativity exists in you that seduces you into believing hopelessness rather than trusting Love. In the process, your world expands and you open to your gifts and talents – perhaps gifts that you never knew you had!
In this global dark night of the soul that we are encountering, a new consciousness and a new way of being is trying to be born. Will we listen and respond to this call of Life? No response is still a response, although it serves darkness and illusion rather than love, beauty and truth.
- What will you choose?
- What will you trust?
- Who/what will you serve?
I’ll be exploring Sacred Activism in more depth in future posts, but in the meantime I’d love to hear from you and what it means to you to combine your spirituality with some form of activism.
Thanks for posting this,
Beth. If ever there was a time for sacred activism, it’s now. I appreciated your explanation and reasoning behind it.
Thanks, Pauline! Yes, it’s time for all of us to find a way to get involved
